We need lots of water for essential things like washing, cooking, drinking and water-pistol fights when it's hot. But we waste loads of it.
How To Save 1,000 Litres!
Shallow End
SHALLOW END
-
5 litres!
Turn the tap off when you brush your teeth! If you leave the tap running, you waste up to five litres of drinking water in a minute. -
5 litres!
Drink water from the fridge! Just leaving the tap running while you wait for it to get cold wastes 5 litres of water in a minute. You can save it by getting a water filter jug to keep in your fridge (or by making ice-cubes) -
45 litres!
Take showers instead of baths! A shower uses only 35 litres, compared with 80 for a bath. -
65 litres!
Only use the washing machine if it's full! Washing machines use up to 65 litres in every wash, so you can save a lot by just making sure you do full washes instead of half loads.
DEEP END
-
9 litres!
Do you need to flush? Maybe, when you're alone at home, or when it's late at night, if no-one else minds, and you've gone for a pee, you don't really need to flush the loo. Saves waking up the neighbours too. -
40 litres a day!
Get a dual flush loo! If you'd rather flush every time, a dual-flush loo lets you choose between a short flush and a full flush. That can save 4 litres every time you use it. Ask at a bathroom retailer for more info. -
90 litres a day!
Use rainwater to flush your loo! -
90 litres!
Get a water butt for your garden! Hosepipes use 9 litres of water a minute. Most water companies sell water butts for the garden at discounted prices. They're cheap (£10-20) and they're helpful during hosepipe bans. Learn from Ken about how to keep your garden beautiful in a drought. -
30 to 50 litres every time you wash up!
Use a super-efficient dishwasher instead of washing up! Bosch has just launched the most water efficient dishwasher you can buy. The LogiXX uses as little as 9 litres per wash, compared to 40 to 60 litres for washing up. -
Money!
Get a water meter! You’re likely to save money by getting a water meter if you’ve got less than 4 people in your house, you’re out during the day and you don’t hose the garden a lot. Your water provider will install a meter for free, and take it out for free any time in the next 12 months if you don’t like it. Uswitch helps you figure out if you’ll save money and, if so, how much. Ofwat has contact details of your local water provider.
