Nappy Service
Parents in cities might want to look into using a nappy service. The one I'm using in London (Nappyeverafter) offers a weekly collection and drop-off of pre-folds as well as rental of nappy covers. They use an electric car for deliveries, and the central washing theoretically saves on energy and water. The cost per week for us is £10 (including the discount for using the Wedge Card) -- I'm not sure how this works out in relation to buying disposables, but it seems reasonable to me.

I have used Nappy Ever After since my first child was born in 2005. Four babies later (most recently twins) I am still delighted by the service and the product. The team at Nappy Ever After make it impossible to consider using disposables. Customers' needs are met on a bespoke level, the like of which I have never experienced in any other service provider. It is obviously an endeavour they all believe in.
Lovely, soft white nappies arrive unfailingly on your collection day and the dirty ones are taken cheerfully away to be cleaned and used again, not to sit forever in the earth.
If I was a baby and I knew that every time I did a poo a swollen pouch of chemicals and plastic would stay in the ground forever, I would be constipated.
And the service is brilliant value, even considering the low price put on disposables these days which probably reflects the low value we put on our earth.

hey all......just to let you know that I have been using the cloth nappies from Nappy Ever After since my daughter was born in December of last year. She is ten and a half months and we're still going strong. However, we do not use the service but have our own nappies......and wash them at home. We bought the Bummies pre-fold nappies and their covers and have not looked back once. We normally do a nappy wash every day and hang them to dry. We have managed a trip to Australia with them and didn't use disposables once! The little holders are fab too. The staff at Nappy Ever After are fab.....always welcoming and ready to listen and you can sit down and relax too........it's a lovely atmosphere.
So.....what of all the stuff you don't want in your washing machine......? Well, our little girl has been pooing on the toilet since she was seven months..........so just wet nappies into the machine.
I would do it all again too.......it's better than all that waste going into a landfill, never to degrade........
good luck.

Hi, I am also a fan of Nappy Ever After. We used them for our first baby and loved the friendly service they provided. For our second baby we are home washing. Once you've got the nappies this costs about £1 a week (WEN has great stats on their nappy facts page).

On the issue of disposing of disposable nappies: Disposable nappies take about 400 years to break down in landfill. A lot of London's waste is incinerated, releasing toxic particles into the air and also leaving behind highly toxic ash. See this article for more info: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/toxics/incineration/the-problem

I used real nappies from Nappy Ever After and can confirm that the service was great. Happily my kids are past that stage now, but I'm still in touch with the shop as they also have an Ecover refill service. Over the last few years I've saved pounds (and many plastic bottles from landfill) by filling up on laundry liquid, washing-up liquid, hand soap, etc.
