Title
In our house hold we are trying so hard to filter all the recyclable items from going into the general rubbish bin. Then one week when we are a little over loaded with plastics, merrily off to the skip to put them in the plastics recycling section only to be told to take it all over to general waste as its no longer shipped for reuse/recycling. The thought of all that plastic in a landfill is such a depressing thought.
I heard a very profound statement a few years ago that will stay with me forever:
EVERY PIECE OF PLASTIC EVER MADE IS STILL ON THE EARTH TODAY!
over and out : (

Help turn this thought into action.
There are so many different types that recycling plastic is not the easiest of actions for councils etc. But most will deal with category 1 and 2. Write to you local Councillor, Get your friends to do so, Make a stink in the local paper.
You can also find many other uses for a lot of plastic items (plant pots, bird feeders etc) - google around for ideas or try FoE
You are right about plastic staying around. There is a ginormous swirl of it in the Atlantic which is breaking into minutes pieces which are being eaten by marine creatures - it kills them..

my council will not recycle it either, it is so disheartening.
What I have started to try and do is to TRY and avoid buying things in plastic. this is no mean feat though as nearly everything comes in plastic, apart from dairylea!!
maybe this is something that the manufacturers need to get involved with, to find alternative packaging materials?

I think I got it wrong, The huge swirl of plastic is in the Pacific.
As for not buying stuff in plastic, there are a number of alternatives. Use your local farmer's market or farm shop. Make your own coleslaw, potato salad and other things which come in tubs. Look for things in jars or tins (both recyclable) Go to the deli counter or meat counter or cheese counter or fish counter and buy things "loose" instead of pre- packaged. Get your milk delivered instead of buying in a plastic bottle. Support the little greengrocer on the high street (if he has not been put out of business by Stressco) Grow your own veg.
