Good Energy

back

A recent report from the National Consumer Council rated Good Energy’s tariff as the best on the market.

The Good Stuff
Their energy is 100% renewable and sourced from small, independent generators.
They reduce national CO2 emissions further by ‘retiring’ 5% of their Renewable Obligation Certificates and 100% of their Levy Exemption Certificates.

About Green-ness certificates
Renewables Obligation Certificates and Levy Exemption Certificates are awarded for green-ness, basically, and companies with extra green-ness can sell their certificates to less green companies for some extra cash – emissions trading, in other words. Retiring these certificates takes the carbon dioxide out of the market and reduces overall carbon emissions.

What this means is that when you’re buying from Good Energy, your money is genuinely funding the expansion of renewable energy, rather than just paying the company to meet their legal obligations as is the case with many other green energy tariffs. According to the NCC, “For consumers who want a green electricity supply, pure and simple, this is probably the closest they’ll get to it.” You can read more on page 16 of this PDF report .
If you decide to start generating your own electricity, they’ll pay you 4.5p per unit generated even if you use it all on site. Find out more

The Bad Stuff
In terms of greenness, there isn’t any.
