Green Credentials
Ecotricity's Good Energy
The Good Stuff
Ecotricity reinvest all of the profits from this tariff into their windfarm business.
They spend a lot per customer on expanding the UK’s renewables capacity, which is good.
The Bad Stuff
Only 25% of this tariff comes from green energy.
The remaining 75% comes from brown energy sources such as coal and nuclear.
Ecotricity doesn’t retire any of their renewables obligation certificates or levy exemption certificates.
They sell them all on, effectively selling the ‘green-ness’ of their activities 2 or 3 times over.
It’s hard to know what to make of that.
In one sense, it’s not very green.
In another, Ecotricity does commit to reinvesting all its profits in its windfarm business.
The energy market is highly competetive so you can hardly blame the company for making as much money as they
can from their certificates if they do then plough it back into windfarms.
If you really want to go for Ecotricity and can pay an extra £20 a year, it’s better to go for New Energy Plus.
