Consumer Resistance Against Packaging's Discussions
Leaving packaging in the shop
How often can we buy loose packaged fruit and veg? Are you happy to have a bag and get your produce weighed free at the checkout.
It is depressing to see how many items on special offer in fruit and veg departments at the supermarket all come bagged up so that the cashier just has to scan the item. Time to revolt and shop elsewhere if we have to go down this route or grow our own.

I’m from Australia, so I’m probably not really relevant to this discussion, but organic co-ops seem to be springing up everywhere. One in particular, at my university, is into people bringing in old jars and containers which are washed and put on a shelf. Grains, pasta, chocolate, etc are kept in barrels, which you dish out into containers, or tie up calico bags that you can buy in different sizes. If you’ve forgotten to bring your own containers, you just use the ones on the shelf and bring them back again. Once a week there’s a veggie delivery, which comes in loose in cardboard boxes. You’re expected to bring the box along the following week to be reused. There are a few packaged products; toothbrushes, cans, and the bulk tofu. They don’t sell meat or dairy; I’ve noticed that cheese tends to be the most packaged thing on the organic market. Anyway, the point is its quite possible to have stores where there’s minimal packaging. The place is called Thoughtful Foods, there’s a web page, but there aren’t any photos really to demonstrate. Sorry, this probably isn’t even relevant.

Elsie that is an excellent description of how to cut down on packaging. Many of us would love to have exactly that sort of shopping but it isn’t available out of big cities. Unpackaged in London does similar to you but as I’m several hundred miles away this is not so easy. We need to encourage this sort of shopping all around the world.

Hey folks this is fantastic – and being from Oz is not irrelevant – we all suffer the consequences of excessive packaging!
I’m sick and tired of battling to get a toothbrush, or batteries, or any other item, out of hard plastic wrappers… Actually i am sick and tired of all the packaging that we have to PAY for every time we buy a product (or multi-pack ‘special’).
I’m hoping to get this group up to a million plus (may take a few months ;) in order to start putting pressure on producers and marketeers. Your comments, discussion, help and invites to others are all appreciated! See also: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/57239?fp=fb003&...
